HERE IS THE BACKSTORY……..

Performance By Fugitive ODB Stuns Wu-Tang Clan Crowd………

NEW YORK — More than a month after fleeing a rehab center and becoming a fugitive from justice, rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard surfaced Tuesday night in a triumphant, if blatantly illegal, performance with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan in front of hundreds of fans.

I can't stay on the stage too long tonight - the cops is after me," O.D.B. told the stunned, gleeful crowd at the Hammerstein Ballroom after joining with the rest of the Clan to perform "Shame on a N---a.

The rapper (born Russell Jones) is wanted by Los Angeles police for his flight from rehab, and he faces two other bench warrants in drug cases in Brooklyn and Queens.

However legally risky, O.D.B.'s performance at the Wu-Tang Clan's release party for their new album, The W, marked a milestone for the group, according to its leader, rapper/producer RZA.

For the first time in three years, you see the whole Wu-Tang Clan onstage tonight," RZA told the screaming crowd.

He had introduced O.D.B. as a "surprise guest.

In addition to lending his trademark half-sung rapping to "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nothin' Ta F--- Wit" and "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," O.D.B. used his time onstage to rant at the crowd.

You know, the whole f---in' world is after me. Y'all know, I'm still surrounded," he said, before explaining that he planned to become "like a bird" and to subsist on "birdseeds or whatever.

You'll see, motherf---ers, you'll see," he concluded.

O.D.B. wore a large orange parka and a hat with its tag attached. When he wasn't rapping, he periodically swilled from a bottle.

As the show concluded, the numerous police officers outside the Hammerstein Ballroom appeared to be unaware of the presence of a fugitive inside.

And as of 12:30 a.m. Wednesday (November 22), New York police had no record of arresting the rapper.

O.D.B.'s unexpected performance Tuesday night is just the latest in a seemingly never-ending

sequence of bizarre actions.

In 1998, he jumped onstage during the Grammy Awards as an award was presented to singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin, proclaiming that the Wu-Tang Clan are "for the children." (see [article id="1429492"]"Ol' Dirty Bastard Tells Why He Stormed Grammy Stage"[/article]).

The rapper spent much of last year in courtrooms, appearing on charges of illegally wearing a bulletproof vest, possessing crack cocaine, making terrorist threats, operating a vehicle illegally and stealing a $50 pair of sneakers. He also released his second solo album, N---a Please.

O.D.B. had been living at the Impact House rehab center in Pasadena, California, after serving six months in county jail for violating his probation by drinking alcohol. Last month, he fled as he was being transported from the center to Los Angeles Criminal Courthouse downtown (see [article id="1429369"]"Ol' Dirty Bastard Flees Drug-Treatment

Facility"[/article]). .

O.D.B. appears on only one song, "Conditioner," on the Wu-Tang Clan's just-released new album, which is dedicated to him (see [article id="1429367"]"Wu-Tang Clan Go Back To Basics For Latest Album"[/article]).

ANOTHER ARTICLE OF THAT EVENING……

Watch ODB perform with Wu-Tang while he was a fugitive……

Personal problems plagued Wu-Tang Clan member, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s entire life. He had endless run-ins with the law and even spent a crazed month on the road as a fugitive in 2000.

Additionally, he had addiction issues that caused death after the rapper suffered an accidental overdose in 2004. The rapper’s first brush with law enforcement came in 1993 after being convicted of second-degree assault and attempted robbery. Despite the stratospheric success of Wu-Tang, trouble continued to surround him at every juncture.

A few years later, the rapper pleaded guilty to attempted assault on his wife. Additionally, he was also the victim of a home invasion at his girlfriend’s house.

Then in 1999, ODB was first arrested for driving without a license and for wearing a bulletproof vest. At that time, it was illegal for felons to wear the item of clothing for protective purposes. A few weeks later, the Wu-Tang man was found with crack cocaine after being arrested in New York for traffic offences.

As a result of the frequent offending, ODB was then sentenced to drug treatment. He spent six months at the county jail before breaking his probation terms by drinking alcohol and being sent to drug treatment facility Impact House.

After four months there, ODB fleed and lived life as a fugitive for a month before being caught. “He physically ran away,” Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Michael O’Gara said in a statement at the time. “It’s my understanding that [ODB’s] councillors were taking him to court to discuss his program with the judge.”

“No one knows where he is,” said district attorney Ken Holder, who prosecuted ODB in the crack-cocaine case. “He decided he’d had enough of the program, and he left.” The rapper had progressed into the second phase of his rehab program, and as a result of his good behaviour, had been granted 12-hour supervised passes to leave Impact House.

Days before his capture on November 27th in Philadelphia, Ol’ Dirty Bastard brazenly joined his Wu-Tang bandmates in New York at the Hammerstein Ballroom. “I can’t stay on the stage too long tonight – the cops is after me,” he told the shocked crowd before joining Wu-Tang to perform, ‘Shame On A N****,’ before resuming his life as a fugitive.

After the performance grabbed headlines all over the world, everybody was aware that Ol’ Dirty Bastard was on the run. He was already infamous before fleeing, and his notoriety increased even further. His cover was blown after a large crowd formed around him in a McDonald’s, which alerted the police to his whereabouts.

Performing on-stage with Wu-Tang Clan was ODB’s idea of hiding in plain sight. Somehow, he managed to escape from the Hammerstein Ballroom without being in the back of a police van. Despite his best efforts, it was clear that his imprisonment was imminent, and he needed to perform with his boys one last time.
