Orange is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts with a population of 7,569 at the 2020 census.  It was first settled by Europeans in 1746, created from lands in the towns of Royalston, Warwick and Athol .  The lands were not fully settled until the latter parts of the century, becoming the “ District of Orange ” in 1783, and finally being incorporated as a town in 1810.  It was named for William, Prince of Orange.

In 1790, the Millers River was dammed within the town, and industry began in the former farming community.  Small industry grew within the town, with the town being considered more of a mill town by 1840.  By the late nineteenth century, the “ New Home Sewing Machine Company ” was the largest industry in town, putting out 1.2 million machines at its peak in 1892.  In 1900, it was home to the pioneer automobile company “ Grout ”, considered the first automobile built in a factory in the United States .

I could not find any information on “Central School ” in Orange, but it is on this card published by “ Carters Postals ”.  There is a caption “ Where the Twig is Bent ” along the upper edge of the vignette image.  It is a great image of what must have been one of the earliest schools in Orange , with all the students in front of the building.

T he card is a UDB, postmarked, 1906, in “ Enfield, Mass ” and mailed to “Woonsocket, R.I.”.  There is some staining on both the front and the reverse, but it is in good condition with minor wear overall .  The image, itself is clean.

The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections. Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.  Corrections appreciated. If this your card, it will be mailed promptly upon receipt of payment...... Free Shipping WorldWide. Thank you for your interest and I hope that I can help you with your collection.....
