According to Caramandi, he and Iannece were leaving a wedding reception when they asked Spirito for a ride. They then asked Spirito to pull over at 11th and Mifflin streets in South Philadelphia, where Iannece shot Spirito in the head.

Iannece allegedly specialized in gambling and took over Spirito's business - expanding into loan-sharking and extortion with Caramandi. He became a "made" member of the mob during an induction ceremony presided over by Scarfo in November 1984 in Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County.

In 1988 Iannece was convicted along with Scarfo and others on racketeering charges and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

FBI agents suspected that Charles "Charlie White" Iannece, as a "South Philly kind of guy," would not stray too far from the city when he traded the life of a reputed mob soldier for that of a fugitive.

They were right.

Iannece, an alleged mob enforcer wanted on extortion, racketeering, drug and murder charges, was only two hours away from his native South Philadelphia, living in a duplex in the affluent Lake Harmony area of the Poconos with his 3-month-old German shepherd.

"This was like going to Europe, if you know these guys," said one source. ''Iannece is a South Philly kind of guy."

FBI agent Charles "Bud" Warner pulled up in a car beside Iannece, 52, yesterday as Iannece apparently was going out for one of his occasional strolls through the woods.

An FBI spokesman said Iannece, who was unarmed, surrendered without incident. A search of Iannece's apartment in the duplex yielded two handguns and fake identification.

Iannece, 52, formerly of Wolf Street near 11th, had "burrowed in," another source said, attracting no attention in the mountains near the Split Rock Resort and other popular getaways.

Warner had been on Iannece's trail since January, when a federal grand jury indicted Iannece, reputed mob boss Nicodemo "Little Nicky" Scarfo, former City Councilman Leland M. Beloff and his top aide, Robert Rego, in the attempted $1 million shakedown of Penn's Landing developer Willard G. Rouse 3rd.

Scarfo, Beloff and Rego were convicted of extortion.

Iannece is also facing trial along with nine others in the September 1984 murder of mobster Salvatore Testa, 29, son of late mob boss Philip "Chicken Man" Testa.

In addition, Iannece has been charged in a sweeping New Jersey grand jury racketeering indictment, which named the top echelon of the Scarfo organized crime family.

Iannece also was named in a federal drug indictment, charging him and several others, including Scarfo, as participants in the distribution of P2P, the main chemical used to make methamphetamine, or speed.

The FBI received information in the past month or so that Iannece might be hiding in the Poconos. Sources said state trooper Thomas Ansel, a member of the federal-local joint Homicide Task Force, contacted another trooper living in the area to keep a look out for Iannece.

The trooper called with the license number of a car parked in the driveway of the duplex where Iannece had been living. The car was registered in the name of a South Philadelphia bar, sources said.

This, a source said, piqued the interest of Warner and the other agents assigned to track Iannece. They drove to the Poconos and made a fairly positive identification.

Iannece disappeared last November, shortly after his mob partner, Nicholas ''Nicky Crow" Caramandi, became a government witness.

Caramandi has testified that Iannece was the trigger man in the killing of Pasquale "Pat the Cat" Spirito because Spirito failed to carry out an assignment to kill another reputed mobster, Mario "Sonny" Riccobene.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR LOOKING.
