•  For Your Consideration: •  A First Edition in HARDCOVER  of: •  “EARWITNESS:  FIFTY CHARACTERS”

(The Seabury Press, 1979) (Hardcover, First Edition, First Printing)

•  BY   ELIAS CANETTI •  Winner, NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE , 1981 •  “This unusual book combines criticism, literary invention, and social psychology. EARWITNESS  displays CANETTI ’s innovative approach to character description which was originally created by the Greek philosopher THEOPHRASTUS and later practiced by the English character writers of the seventeenth century. Relying on poetic imagery, singular insights, and unabashed word play, CANETTI  displays fifty characters, ironic paradigms of human behavior, to demonstrate how man’s individual and social being frustrate rigid psychological or sociological categories.” —THE PUBLISHER •  “MR. CANETTI  is in a playful mood…. Behind the playfulness, there’s an ominous note, a chill of apprehension, the shudder of a man who sees too much. Like KAFKA, whom he admired, MR. CANETTI is amused by misguided striving, by elaborate gestures of circumspection….  One thinks of a more playful ERVING GOFFMAN, a less playful DONALD BARTHELME, perhaps of HENRI MICHAUX in his later books. The choreography in EARWITNESS  might be by MERCE CUNNINGHAM, the music by JOHN CAGE. It is pleasant to see great men play. For every accusing novel, every skewering volume of social science, we ought to have an EARWITNESS .” —NEW YORK TIMES (1982) •  “CANETTI  has done what philosophers ought to do, and what they used to do: he has  p rovided us with new concepts. He has also shown, in ways which seem to me entirely fresh, the interaction of ‘the mythical’ with the ordinary stuff of human life…. CANETTI  is one our great imaginers and solitary men of genius.” —IRIS MURDOCH •  “CANETTI  has taken a new look at the nature of social life…his approach is both fresh and fruitful…and has given him the basis for a very comprehensive view of human affairs.” —ARNOLD TOYNBEE •  “He stands out as one of the foremost aphorists  of our time, a man who in his phrasing of life's ironies is sometimes reminiscent of great predecessors like LA BRUYERE and LICHTENBERG.”

—THE SWEDISH ACADEMY, ON AWARDING THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE TO CANETTI

•  “CANETTI  ultimately created an oeuvre that is more individualist, more eccentric perhaps, in some ways more original, than that of any of the other great 20th-century modernists from central Europe.”

—JULIAN PREECE, THE GUARDIAN (UK)

•  “ In 50 short chapters, under such fanciful headings as ‘The Paper-Drunkard,’ ‘The Never-Must,’ and ‘The Earwitness,’ CANETTI  describes each specimen of psychological aberration with the kind of mock-serious generality one might find in an astrology book. Part of the fun of EARWITNESS  is recognizing family, friends, and enemies among the 50 types CANETTI  chronicles. A little less fun, perhaps, but certainly more enlightening, is recognizing yourself and the particular strategies you employ to dissemble, evade, and basically survive in a jungle full of characters different but every bit as screwed up as yourself.”

—MARK NADJA, AMAZON REVIEW

•  “CANETTI  didn’t earn the Nobel Prize for Literature for this book, and yet it’s my favorite of all his works, even more than the astonishing CROWDS AND POWER. This is simply great literature, remarkable writing and character-capturing. It’s also very funny.”

—TOM LICHTENBERG, GOODREADS REVIEW

•  “Long before DAVID FOSTER WALLACE was briefly interviewing some hideous men, [CANETTI ]…wrote a serious of character sketches that have that same sense of wit, that same pairing of brevity and brutal realism, and remain funny, bitchy, and completely relevant decades after the fact.”

—ANDREW, GOODREADS REVIEW

•  “ Welcome to CANETTI ’s nightmare of misfits, the alienated and the neurotic. In these highly original character sketches CANETTI introduces us to solitary figures who are doomed to live alone, gratefully accept their punishment, hoard water, avoid darkness, sleep standing in dead-end streets, only want to be left in peace, are ashamed of their words and a panoply of other seemingly self-inflicted horrors. In style and tone the characters are reminiscent of KAFKA….”

*********** How We GRADE CONDITION ***********

DETAILS . The condition of every item we sell will be described in detail.

FLAWS.  All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized.  Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw. It is also possible that we may miss some perfections! Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.

GRADING SYSTEM.  For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability):  VERY FINE or LIKE NEW FINE (or EXCELLENT) NEAR FINE (or NF) VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+) VERY GOOD (or VG) GOOD FAIR ACCEPTABLE POOR “POOR.”  Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”

RETURNS.  We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil! (*Get it?)

POP QUIZ.  Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math). EXTRA VISUALS.  Although we include multiple photographs in our listings, we usually have others we could share with you. (These extra photos also help to establish a paper-trial in the rare case that an item is damaged en route to you.)

*********** SHIP PING ***********

Every item is individually priced for postage. That price can be found in the listing, not here. UNITED STATES:  In the USA, we ship books via MEDIA MAIL.  Magazines are generally shipped PRIORITY MAIL; the Post Office does not permit magazines which carry advertising to be shipped MEDIA MAIL.

INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS:  To those international countries to which we ship (please see list), the cost of postage is calculated by eBay and individually listed with each item.

EXPEDITED SHIPPING:  In the United States, EXPEDITED SHIPPING is available if you request, and pay, for it BEFORE we ship your item.

*********** HOW  TO PAY ***********

PAYMENT:  As we ship promptly, we ask that you please pay promptly—via PAYPAL. With auctions, payments should be made before 3 days (72 hours) from the time an auction for an item closes.
