First Day Cover for the 1968 Christmas stamp, 6-cent Christmas stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., November 1, 1968 , FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Former vaudeville and burlesque performer PHIL SILVERS (1911-1985) starred in film comedies from the early 1940s, but his biggest success came on television, where he is best remembered as Sergeant Bilko in the sitcom You'll Never Get Rich (1955-1959), for which he won five Emmys . Silvers also won Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical for Top Banana (1952) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1972) and a Tony nomination in the same category for Do Re Mi (1960). ANTHONY QUAYLE (1913-1989), the talented star of stage, film, television and audiocassette recordings, was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in 1969 for Anne of the Thousand Days. His other feature films include The Guns of Navarone (1961), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Operation Crossbow (1965) and MacKenna's Gold (1969). Mimic, comedian, singer, dancer and actor DANNY KAYE (1913-1987), born David Daniel Kominski, received an honorary Academy Award in 1955 and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1981. Kaye, who signed with Sam Goldwyn in 1943, appeared in a number of feature films, including Up In Arms (1944), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), Hans Christian Andersen (1952), White Christmas (1954) and The Court Jester (1956). Comic actor Comic actor DOM DeLUISE (1933-2009 appeared on Broadway and on the big and small screens. His feature films included The Glass-Bottom Boat (1966), The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Silent Movie (1976), The Muppet Movie (1979), History of the World - Part 1 (1981), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Spaceballs (1987) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and DeLuise also hosted a weekly summer variety program on TV. A lifelong opera buff, DeLuise had been given the opportunity from time to time to perform with various opera companies . In 1995, he brought down the house at New York's Metropolitan in the role of Frosh the Jailer in Die Fledermaus. ARTHUR GODFREY (1903-1983), best known as a radio and television performer, also appeared in feature films, including Four for Texas (1963, his debut) and The Glass-Bottom Boat (1966). For 27 years, he hosted a radio program with a "one guy" approach (he did commercials, introduced songs and made small talk with his audience), and was the host on both radio and television of Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. GENE NELSON (1920-1996), an actor, director and screenwriter, appeared on both stage and screen. He directed a number of films, including the Elvis Presley vehicles Kissin' Cousins (1963) and Harum Scarum (1965), and the TV series The Rifleman, The Donna Reed Show and Mod Squad. British actor KEITH BAXTER (born in 1933) appeared in both feature films (The Barretts of Wimpole Street, 1957) and made-for-TV movies, including Merlin (1998). British actor PAUL HECHT (born in 1941) has worked steadily on stage and in feature films and television since the 1960s. Nominated for a Tony Award in 1968 for Rosenkrantz and Gildenstern Are Dead, he made his film debut six years later as a rabbi in God Only Knows. Actor PAUL LIPSON (1913-1995) appeared on three episodes of Car 54, Where Are You? in 1962 and the 1960 feature film, Pretty Boy Floyd. On Broadway, he was one of Zero Mostel's successors as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Fine condition.
