•  For your consideration: •  A LOT of two ( 2 ) BOOKS by:

• LEO PERUTZ •  “ I admire your style, your language and your art, down to its tiniest details .” —IAN FLEMING, IN A LETTER TO THE AUTHOR •  “A craftsman of the first order .” —GRAHAM GREENE

•  “Undoubtedly the finest fantasy author of his time.” —FRANZ ROTTENSTEINER

•  “If LEO PERUTZ  does not teach your flesh to creep, it certainly never will.”

— SIEGFRIED KRACAUER

•  “PERUTZ  is the great magical realist of German literature. He is someone who basically does what GABRIEL GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ and  JORGE LUIS BORGES have also discovered for themselves: namely, to tell the wonderful, the incomprehensible and the magical with—as MÁRQUEZ  calls it—an immobile face.:

—DANIEL KEHLMANN

• TITLE  1 : • “ THE SWEDISH CAVALIER :  A Novel ” (Arcade, 1993) (First Edition, Hardcover)

• By LEO PERUTZ

•  “A thief and a nobleman, both down on their luck, cross paths on a bitter winter’s day in 1701. One…is fleeing the gallows; the other…has escaped execution to fight for his Swedish king. Neither will reach his destination…. LEO PERUTZ  has created a picaresque world of barons and brigands, swashbuckling dragoons and spurned lovers, gentleman farmers and masked robbers, and lucky parchments, magic spells, and mystical visions. Part adventure, part historical novel of war-ravaged Europe,  THE SWEDDISH CAVALIER   is also a moral tale of deceit, betrayal, and redemption.”

—THE PUBLISHER •  “PERUTZ  is a master, and  THE SWEDISH CAVALIER   is his masterpiece.” —FIGARO MAGAZINE

•  “As much a gothic tale with a message as a good literate page-turner. Vintage PERUTZ .”

—KIRKUS REVIEWS

•  “An immaculately constructed story, full of ironic parallels, where every episode and piece of dialogue echoes with significance.”

—SUNDAY TELEGRAPH (UK) •  “A beautifully constructed parable of justice and redemption…by an acknowledged master of the historical novel.” —TIMES EDUCATIONAL SUPPLEMENT

• “It’s surely one of the best historical novels I’ve ever read. It's something between JORGE LUIS BORGES and RAFAEL SABATINI (and sure enough, BORGES praised PERUTZ  highly). ” —PULPETTI (BLOG)

•• TITLE  2 : •  “ MASTER OF THE DAY OF JUDGMENT : An Arcade Mystery”   (Arcade, 1994) (First Edition Thus, Trade Paperback)

• by LEO PERUTZ

•  “Vienna, 1909. When the celebrated actor EUGEN BISCHOFF is found dead in his garden pavilion, suspicion falls immediately on BARON VON YOSCH, a well-to-do army officer who was once the lover of the dead man’s wife. By all appearances—the door was locked from the inside when the two shots rang out—the actor took his own life, but someone, or something, drove him to it. The baron sets out to learn all he can about the actor’s death in order to clear his name. Meanwhile, within a few days, similar apparent suicides are reported. What started out as a straightforward quest to establish BISCHOFF’s last deeds and discover the truth of his death becomes a search through the ages for an invisible enemy identified only by the actor’s dying whisper, ‘…the Day of Judgment.’ In this probing mystery, LEO PERUTZ  combines his hallmark blend of suspense and the fantastic in a tale that leads back into history and forward to the bloodred trumpets of the Apocalypse….” —THE PUBLISHER

•  “Reading PERUTZ  may alter your perception of popular fiction. For a while you may find yourself expecting twists that never come and  outcomes most authors never intended, but it is worth the trouble. As does BORGES, he finds deeper mysteries lurking in the shadows of genre fiction and like NABOKOV illuminates them with a quiet but barbed humor. That his eye is also sharp as a scalpel and cuts as deeply is only one of the bonuses of discovering his work.” —DAVID VINEYARD, MYSTERY FILE (BLOG) •  “A haze of supernatural horrors clouds the book with increasing density, and the explanation which might easily, in the hands of a less distinguished writer, fall into the banal and commonplace, here takes on the correct tone of unearthly reality. It is decidedly not a book for the bedside: the strings of naked pagan fear are so well played on that an uncomfortable chill sensation must be left on even the midday reader. Those who like sensation will certainly not be disappointed.”

—FRANICS LLOYD, THE LONDON MERCURY (1930) •  “PERUTZ  tells his tale in a flowing, worldly manner that gives the very flavor of life in Vienna in the old days, cultured, mocking, gay. The book makes interesting reading both for its story and the fine technique of its telling.”

—ROSE C. FELD, NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW (1930)

•  “Hair-raising.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS •  “Spellbinding story that will enchant, mystify, and astonish.” —LIBRARY JOURNAL

•  “A master…in the grand page-turning tradition.” —BOSTON GLOBE •  “A great modern writer.” —PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

•  “Macabre…gripping.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY •  “Brilliant.” —NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

•  “Beats the DAN BROWN hands down.”

—PULPETTI (BLOG)

3. OUR DESCRIPTIONS.  We describe every item we sell as clearly and accurately as we can. When it comes to describing condition, we tend toward being conservative.  4. *********** How We GRADE CONDITION ***********

DETAILS . The condition of every item we sell will be described in detail.

FLAWS.  All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized.  Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw. It is also possible that we may miss some perfections! Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.

GRADING SYSTEM.  For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability):  VERY FINE or LIKE NEW FINE (or EXCELLENT) NEAR FINE (or NF) VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+) VERY GOOD (or VG) GOOD FAIR ACCEPTABLE POOR “POOR.”  Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”

RETURNS.  We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil! (*Get it?)

POP QUIZ.  Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math). EXTRA VISUALS.  Although we include multiple photographs in our listings, we usually have others we could share with you. (These extra photos also help to establish a paper-trial in the rare case that an item is damaged en route to you.)

*********** SHIP PING ***********

Every item is individually priced for postage. That price can be found in the listing, not here. UNITED STATES:  In the USA, we ship books via MEDIA MAIL.  Magazines are generally shipped PRIORITY MAIL; the Post Office does not permit magazines which carry advertising to be shipped MEDIA MAIL.

INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS:  To those international countries to which we ship (please see list), the cost of postage is calculated by eBay and individually listed with each item.

EXPEDITED SHIPPING:  In the United States, EXPEDITED SHIPPING is available if you request, and pay, for it BEFORE we ship your item.

*********** HOW  TO PAY ***********

PAYMENT:  As we ship promptly, we ask that you please pay promptly—via PAYPAL. With auctions, payments should be made before 3 days (72 hours) from the time an auction for an item closes. After 4 days—and independent of us!—eBay automatically begins a process for unpaid action. NEED MORE TIME?  If you need more time to pay, PLEASE just contact us in advance of the deadline. We understand how life happens, so we don't mind being reasonable. Thank you!
